Major Grass Areas should be oriented within 20 degrees of due south and
have overhangs for summer shadding.
A Garage on the west blocks summer sun and winter winds.
A Trellis with a deciduous vine on the east or west wall serves to shade the
wall while lifting vines away from the house, thereby still admitting summer breezes.
Deciduous Trees should shade east, west and southwest sides in the summer.
Plant deciduous trees with low crowns to the souteast and southwest of the
home. However, do not plant trees within 60 degres of due south. This
leaves an area 60 degrees to the east and west of due south open to let in
winter sun. Trees planted in this area will block the warming winter sun and
reduce passive solar glare gains by as much as 30% with their bar branches. A
deciduous tree, six-to-eight-feet, planted near your home will begin shading
the home at window height in the first year. Depending on your species, the tree will shade the
roof in 5 - 10 years time.
A Windbreak of evergreen trees and shrubs to the north and northwest
buffers winter winds. Plant windbreak trees and shruubs contiguoisly, at
a distance from the home of two to five times the mature height of the trees.
Do not plant evergreens on the south side of the home; they will block the
winter sun.
