| The Not So Big House |
| A list of salient principles outlined in the book written by Sarah Susanka. |
 |
| Double-Duty Spaces. As mentioned before in the formal/informal dining area, the author suggests perhaps locating a home office in an alcove
of a master bedroom. She suggests placing televisions in cabinets so that the television can be taken out during certain occasions and put away when the
room is being otherwise used.
|
 |
| Make A "Place Of One's Own". This can mean a variety of things. At times it means creating an "Away Room"
which is a quiet, comfortable place for adults to enjoy "acoustical privacy". Other times it means a home office or a room which is furnished with
object that have particular meaning for a person, or where specialized activities take place.
|
 |
| Create Specific Places To Store Or Locate Items. Everyone has the "detritus" of daily life such as items for recycling,
mail and bills, newspapers, etc. Then there are the necessary objects that sometimes are hard to locate such as control panels, a laptop computer or the phone.
Susanka suggests making a place for these things including making a place for storage. She reminds readers of the space saving solutions found inside a sailboat.
Significant items such as artwork or a special artifact should also be granted a certain showcase area.
